SPML Infra, a publicly listed infrastructure development company in India, has secured an INR 1,128 crore ($120 million) contract to develop a 1 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at NTPC Ltd’s Barauni Thermal Power Station in Bihar, marking its first large-scale BESS project.

Awarded by NTPC, this project ranks among the largest single BESS orders in India.

The scope of work includes design, engineering, supply, civil works, erection, and commissioning of a 250 MW/1,000 MWh BESS comprising 5 MWh DC containers with a battery management system and thermal management system, 33 kV panel boards, 220 kV DC and AC cables, a 220 kV switchyard, and all associated accessories. The project will be executed over an 18-month period, followed by 15 years of operation and maintenance.

The project will seamlessly integrate large-scale battery storage with existing thermal power infrastructure, enabling peak load management, grid stability, and efficient integration of renewable power.

This order strengthens SPML Infra’s position in India’s emerging battery energy storage ecosystem, advancing its commitment to developing cutting-edge energy storage solutions in collaboration with its technology partner, Energy Vault (NYSE: NRGV), tailored to meet India’s scale and ambition.
