Amara Raja Energy & Mobility has surpassed 1 GWh of cumulative lithium-based energy storage deployment in India’s telecom sector, marking a significant milestone for distributed lithium storage adoption in the country.
The company said its battery systems have been installed across more than 50,000 telecom sites nationwide, reinforcing its position as a leading supplier in the segment with a cumulative market share exceeding 35%.
Amara Raja stated the milestone signals that distributed lithium storage can be deployed and operated at scale under Indian conditions. The company now targets 2 GWh installed capacity by 2026, doubling the deployment in a year, with data centre and energy storage segments as the next growth engines.
India is undergoing a structural shift in energy demand, as the ongoing 5G rollout, rapid data centre expansion and the increasing integration of renewable energy are driving the need for reliable, flexible and high-performance energy storage solutions.
As lithium-based storage approaches lifecycle cost parity with conventional technologies while offering superior operational efficiency, India’s battery storage market is moving beyond early-stage deployment supported by national targets of 236 GWh by 2032 and strong policy support. The deployment of distributed lithium storage systems by Amara highlights the ability of these technologies to operate reliably across oss diverse and demanding Indian conditions.
M.M Venkata Krishna, business head – industrial batteries, ARE&M, said, “The scale we have built within telecom—along with the systems, execution capability, and customer relationships—positions us to expand into adjacent segments such as data centres, industrial applications, and commercial infrastructure.”
Harshavardhana Gourineni, executive director, ARE&M, added, “This milestone reflects a broader transition underway in India’s energy ecosystem. Energy storage is evolving from a support function to a core infrastructure layer, driven by digitisation, electrification, and renewable integration. The shift from conventional technologies to advanced storage solutions will be gradual, but it is now clearly underway.”
Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd (ARE&M) operates across a diverse range of solutions and products, which includes energy storage solutions, Lithium-ion cell manufacturing, wide range of EV chargers, Li-ion battery pack assembly, automotive and industrial lubricants, and exploration of new chemistries, among others. ARE&M is also one of the largest manufacturers of energy storage products for both industrial and automotive applications in India.
