India installed about 18.5 GW of utility-scale solar capacity and 4.59 GW of rooftop solar in CY 2024, according to JMK Research & Analytics’ Annual India Solar Report Card CY2024.

Rajasthan, with a contribution of 7.5 GW, led the annual solar installations, followed by Gujarat (5.1 GW) and Tamil Nadu (1.4 GW).

JMK analysts expect the nation to commission about 22.8 GW of new utility-scale solar projects and 5.8 GW of rooftop/onsite solar projects in CY 2025.

As of Dec. 31, 2024, about 79.2 GW of utility-scale solar capacity has been commissioned in India, while another 71.8 GW is under pipeline (where auctions are completed).

Leading players in 2024

Modules. Waaree Energies led module shipments with a share of 14.1% of the overall supplies in the Indian market in 2024. It was followed by Jinko (10.5%) and Longi (10.3%). Chinese and international players’ solar PV module shipments dropped in 2024 due to the ALMM  [Approved List of Models and Manufacturers] order, effective April 1, 2024.  [As per the ALMM order, only the solar modules and manufacturers making to the MNRE-approved ALMM list are eligible for government-backed projects. The policy was introduced by the MNRE to safeguard the domestic industry from dumping of Chinese products and ensure the use of quality solar cells and modules in PV projects.]

Adani topped in PV module exports, followed by Waaree and First Solar.

First Solar exported about 67% of its total India production in CY2024.

Inverters. Sungrow topped in inverter supplies with 32.5% share of the overall shipments in the Indian market in 2024. Sineng contributed 14.6%, and TBEA and FIMER 13.6% each.

Utility-scale solar projects. Adani, ReNew and O2 Power led in utility-scale solar project development for power supply to Discoms under PPA contract. Adani developed 23.1% of the overall 10.9 GW Discom PPA projects commissioned in 2024.

Amplus, Brookfield and Tata Power led in development of open access (private PPA) solar capacity in CY2024.

Jakson Green, Tata Power and Sterling & Wilson were the leading third-party EPC contractors for utility-scale solar projects in India in CY2024.

Rooftop (on-site projects). Tata Power Solar, Mahindra Solarize and Amplus led in rooftop (on-site) solar project development.
