Coal India Ltd (CIL) and U.P. Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (UPRVUNL) have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a 500 MW solar power project in Uttar Pradesh.
The proposed solar installation is a part of CIL’s broader strategy to diversify its energy portfolio and contribute to India’s net-zero goals. The agreement also includes provisions for potential future collaborations between the two public sector entities.
Coal India aims to install 3 GW of solar capacity by 2025–26 and expand this to 5 GW by 2029–30 across the country. In line with this commitment, it has secured a 300 MW solar power project from Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd (GUVNL). The project is to be developed at the Gujarat Industrial Power Corp. Ltd (GIPCL)’s solar park in Khavda.
Coal India has also signed an MoU with Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RRVUNL) to explore renewable and thermal energy projects totaling up to 4,100 MW through a Joint Venture company.
