SM Auto Engineering (SMA), a Pune-based automotive component system manufacturer, has joined hands with Taiwan based Gotech Energy (GTE) to design, develop and manufacture advanced battery packs and battery management systems for the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market.

The collaboration will cater to two-, three- and four-wheeler EVs, automated guided vehicle and stationary applications, and provide powertrain integration services.

The first state-of-the-art plant under the collaboration will be set up in Pune and will be ready by the second quarter of the calendar year 2021. Together, SMA and GTE, will harness each other’s strengths to meet the customers’ demands effectively.

Founded in 2010, GTE is now a part of the $4-billion electronic giant Supreme Group of Taiwan. Apart from battery pack designing, it designs and manufactures battery management systems with cloud management systems to fully connect to smart charging stations/swapping stations. Their technology also allows fleet operators to monitor the state of the battery pack remotely and take timely maintenance actions.

GTE chairman Jackson Ka and managing director Allen Chang said: “The Indian EV market is in a nascent phase. The Indian government’s push towards electrification with relevant policies will propel the market to grow. By cooperating with SMA, the expert in the automotive industry, we have full confidence to extend the EV business in India together.”

Sanjay Chopda, managing director, SMA, added: “We see strong growth prospects in the EV sector and a need for providing our customers with reliable and high-quality EV components. To achieve this, we knew we have to manufacture locally and have the right technology provider. GTE has a solid technical base and that, coupled with the strengths of SMA, will help us become a top-notch supplier.”

SMA is a diversified system supplier of heat exchangers, two-wheeler chassis and swing arms, complete exhaust systems, body sub-assemblies, tubular and sheet metal assemblies, high-density poly-ethylene mudguards and spray suppressors.
