PNOC, WindStream partner to deploy hybrid wind-solar RE solutions in Philippines

The Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC) has partnered with Telangana-based renewable energy solutions provider WindStream Energy Technologies India to deploy hybrid wind-solar solutions in remote, off-grid areas of the Philippines.

The two partners recently signed a memorandum of understanding to deploy these systems, called SolarMills, across small island communities in the country.

SolarMill, designed by WindStream Energy Technologies, is a complete renewable energy generation product. Instead of a footprint dedicated to a singular solution, it combines vertical-axis wind turbines, solar panels, and a patented system of integrated electronics (including dynamic maximum power point tracking) to create a hybrid product with a higher energy generation per square foot.

SolarMills’ advantages include a simple ballasted installation that avoids roof penetration, higher power density per square foot, scalable power generation, custom design based on the needs, increased battery life and minimal battery storage capacity due to continuous power generation (smooth battery charging and discharging).

PNOC, the corporate arm of Philippines’ Department of Energy, manages the exploration of the oil, exploitation and development of all energy resources in the Philippines. PNOC said that deployment of the SolarMill in the Philippines will accelerate the government’s electrification goal because of the system’s compact size, which makes it easier to deploy and install in remote areas.

The partnership with WindStream Energy will also support the National Power Corp.’s hybridization programme for small power utility groups in off-grid areas.

“By blending diesel-powered generation with solar and wind power, the initiative seeks to enhance energy access and sustainability in off-grid communities,” PNOC said.
