Battery energy storage systems

The South African Government’s Department of Mineral Resources and Energy announced French utility Électricité de France (EDF) will develop 257 MW of battery energy-storage systems across three projects, while South African renewable energy company Scatec Africa will develop one 103 MW project.

Fimer recently supplied its 2 MVA inverters for battery energy storage systems (BESS) deployed at IT major Capgemini’s campuses in Mumbai and Noida.

Oil India intends to deploy battery energy storage systems (BESS) alongside gas engine-driven generators in its field installations. With this arrangement, it will run the generator during the daytime only (while charging the BESS) and draw power from the charged BESS for the night hours.

Corporate decarbonization, value chain integration, wind-solar hybrid projects, battery energy storage, offshore wind, green hydrogen, and value-added offerings such as energy-as-a-service are key trends and technologies shaping up India’s renewable energy sector and offering ample scope for investments.

The EnerPack from Indian manufacturer Jakson consists of a hybrid inverter, lithium ferro phosphate batteries, and an intelligent energy management system that can smartly combine grid power, solar power, wind power, and even diesel generator power supply to maximize the use of renewable energy.

DNV GL has issued its annual Energy Transition Outlook. It reports that global electricity demand is set to grow by a factor of 2.5. Over half of this demand is expected to be met with renewable energy by 2050, while storage will play a key role. It adds that grid infrastructure expenditures are less related to variable renewable energy assets than to increasing energy demand. In the current scenario, meanwhile, global warming is likely to reach 2.6°C.

Neyveli Lignite Corporation India Ltd (NLCIL) has re-tendered the 2 x 10 MW grid-connected solar PV power project with the reduced 8 MWh battery energy storage capacity. It has also invited bids to lend INR 25.52 billion ($394 million) in finance required for the proposed 709 MW solar project in Tamil Nadu state.

Gurugram-based company EXICOM Tele-Systems Ltd has aimed to install 1 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2018-19. The company has already deployed 125 charging stations for electric vehicles in Delhi-NCR.

To date, the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ltd has installed roughly 1 GW of renewables in India. NTPC is planning several projects including floating solar and battery storage projects nationwide.
