L&T Construction has commissioned 185 MW of grid-connected solar capacity coupled with a 254 MWh battery energy storage system at Kajra in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district, marking India’s largest commissioned solar-plus-BESS project to date.

Developed for Bihar State Power Generation Co. Ltd (BSPGCL), the project was executed by L&T on an EPC basis. The tender was issued in December 2023, with L&T awarded the EPC contract along with ten years of operations and maintenance in June 2024.

The co-located BESS will enable storage of solar energy during low-demand period and discharge when the demand peaks. In addition, it will help smoothening the fluctuations in generation, frequency regulation and voltage support. It comes with black start capability to the grid that will facilitate quick re-energization after an outage.

The project is the second large-scale BESS project to be commissioned in India, following an earlier installation in Chhattisgarh.

Hithium supplied 82 containerized BESS units using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry and liquid-cooling technology, designed to ensure safety, efficiency, and reliable performance under high thermal conditions.
