Juniper Green Energy’s 100 MWh merchant BESS nears completion with 60 MWh commissioned

Juniper Green Energy has successfully commissioned 60 MWh of its 100 MWh merchant battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Bikaner district of Rajasthan. The project, developed through the company’s subsidiary Juniper Green Cosmic, marks Juniper Green Energy’s first operational merchant BESS.

A merchant BESS is a grid‑connected battery project that earns revenues by selling power and grid services in power exchanges instead of being backed by a fixed long‑term offtake contract. In India, Juniper’s project is differentiated because it is structured specifically as a merchant asset for the sale of power and grid services, whereas most earlier BESS projects in the nation have been tied to long‑term, contracted revenues, such as through discom, utility or bilateral offtake agreements.

Juniper’s newly commissioned merchant BESS capacity has successfully completed trial operations and received approval from the Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC). Commercial operations started on Dec. 24, 2025.

The remaining 40 MWh capacity is expected to be commissioned shortly. Upon commissioning of the full 100 MWh, the project will become one of the largest operating BESS in India, offering significant potential for merchant revenue streams including peak arbitrage, grid balancing services, and ancillary market participation.

In parallel, Juniper Green Energy has already installed 400 MWh of BESS capacity at Fatehgarh, Rajasthan, which is expected to be commissioned by Q1 2026, further strengthening the company’s storage portfolio and long-term growth visibility.

As part of its long-term growth strategy, Juniper plans to deploy BESS capacity across all its solar project sites connected to the ISTS grid, creating a scalable, integrated renewable-plus-storage platform.

“The commissioning of our first merchant BESS underscores Juniper Green Energy’s execution strength and strategic focus on emerging opportunities in energy storage. We view BESS as a key value-accretive asset class that complements our renewable portfolio and enhances diversification while supporting grid reliability,” said Ankush Malik, CEO, Juniper Green Energy.
