NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Ltd, has invited bids to set up a 500 MWh (125 MW × 4 hours) standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) project, connected to the State Transmission Utility (STU), in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The project will provide 500 MWh of storage capacity (125 MW × 4 hours) on an on-demand basis to Chhattisgarh State Power Distribution Co. Ltd (CSPDCL).
The BESS developer will make the system available to CSPDCL for a single charge–discharge cycle per day, with the provision for occasional dual cycles—up to five days per month—subject to an annual limit of 420 cycles. CSPDCL, the end procurer of the storage capacity, aims to use the BESS to balance the grid during peak demand, manage off-peak surplus energy, and enhance system reliability. The successful bidder will enter into a Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) with CSPDCL.
The BESS developer’s scope of work includes setting up the BESS, interconnecting it with the STU network, and undertaking complete operation and maintenance. The project will be located near the Khedamara Substation. Land will be provided on a right-to-use basis to the developer at an annual lease charge of ₹1 per project per year through a suitable agreement with CSPDCL.
The project is eligible for central financial assistance in the form of viability gap funding (VGF).
