Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RRVUNL) has concluded its tender for a 500 MW / 2000 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) at a price of INR 2.85 lakh/MW/month—the nation’s lowest so far for a 4-hour, single-cycle BESS.

“The 4-hour, 1-cycle tariff has now nearly matched the 2-hour, 2-cycle L1 tariff without viability gap funding (recorded in GUVNL tender). What began at INR 4.44 lakh/MW/month dropped to INR 3.59 lakh/MW/month (SJVN’s Uttar Pradesh tender) and has now reached INR 2.85 lakh/MW/month—a significant decline. For comparison, solar + 4 hours of BESS is currently priced at INR 2.87/kWh,” said Debmalya Sen, president, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA).

Patanjali Ayurved won the largest slice of 250 MW/1 GWh. Ultravibrant Solar Energy, Rama Reflection India, MEC Power Solutions, Bhagwati Lacto Vegetarain Exports, and Diwakar Renewable and Infra secured 50 MW/200 MWh each.

RRVUNL seeks to utilize these energy storage systems on an “on-demand” basis to meet the state’s requirements during peak and off-peak hours.

The utility will enter into a battery energy storage purchase agreement (BESPA) with the selected bidders for providing energy storage services. The selected BESS developers will set up the systems on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis.

Projects awarded ARE eligible for central financial assistance in the form of viability gap funding (VGF) through the Power System Development Fund (PSDF) scheme, issued by the Ministry of Power.
