French energy giant ENGIE today announced that it has won 280 MW/560 MWh battery storage project in Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd’s (GUVNL) auction for 2 GW/4 GWh capacity. This marks ENGIE’s formal entry into utility-scale storage in India and expands its India portfolio to 2.75 GW.
As per the tender requirements, ENGIE will develop the BESS projects in Gujarat, connected to the intrastate transmission system, on a build–own–operate basis and make the storage capacity available to GUVNL for charging and discharging on an “on-demand” basis.
This project comes at a pivotal moment for India’s renewable and storage sector. As solar and wind capacity scale rapidly, the country needs large-format storage systems that can deliver clean power on demand, reduce curtailment, and enhance grid stability. ENGIE’s GUVNL BESS project will help address peak loads, enable smoother 24/7 renewable integration, and support the next phase of India’s grid modernisation.
Globally, ENGIE aims to deploy 95 GW of renewable and storage installed capacity by 2030. The Group already operates 55 GW with an additional 6 GW under construction.
“India’s renewable story is entering a decisive phase, where scale must be matched with firmness, flexibility and digital intelligence. Storage is the bridge that will take us there,” said Amit Jain, CEO and country manager – ENGIE India, and managing director-Renewables & Batteries India & South-East Asia. “This award strengthens ENGIE’s mission to build the next generation of hybrid and storage-backed infrastructure that can support peak demand, integrate more renewables and deliver dependable clean power to millions. Backed by ENGIE’s global storage expertise, we are committed to shaping an energy system that is resilient, efficient and ready for the future India is building.”
