India breaks INR 3/kWh barrier for solar + 4-hour energy storage with SECI’s 2 GW tender

India has breached the INR 3/kWh mark for a solar + 4-hour energy storage system (ESS) configuration, with the Solar Energy Corp. of India Ltd’s (SECI) tender for 2 GW of solar PV projects coupled with a 1 GW/4 GWh energy storage system yielding a lowest tariff of INR 2.86/kWh. This tariff has been driven down by falling battery prices and competitive bidding in the auction, which saw participation from several new entrants in the sector.

The lowest discovered price of INR 2.86/kWh was quoted by Shivalaya Construction Ltd (600 MW), Purvah Green Power (300 MW), Welspun Renewable Energy won 200 MW, MB Power (Madhya Pradesh) Ltd (150 MW), Banyan Insolation (100 MW), Stockwell Solar Services (80 MW) and LC infra Projects (50 MW).

Of the balance capacity, SAEL Industries was allocated 300 MW and GH2 Solar 50 MW at INR 2.87/kWh. Navayuga Green Energy secured the remainder at this price.

“The cut throat competition witnessed in the recent standalone BESS tenders seems to have rubbed onto the Solar+Storage segment as well, and we welcome the new entrants in the list as SECI’s first time awardees,” said Pratik Prasun, deputy general manager, SECI.

As per the tender, each 1 MW of solar capacity must be supported by at least 500 kW/2 MWh of energy storage. The projects can be set up anywhere in India, as these must connect to the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)
