Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath recently inaugurated a green hydrogen plant set up by Torrent Group in Gorakhpur. The project, with an annual production capacity of 72 tonnes per annum (TPA), has been jointly developed by Torrent Group entities—Torrent Power and Torrent Gas.
The green hydrogen produced at the plant will be blended with natural gas in Torrent Gas’ city gas distribution (CGD) network in Gorakhpur, with a blending concentration of up to 2%. This green hydrogen-natural gas blend will be supplied to domestic households, compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, and industries in the region through the existing natural gas pipeline infrastructure.
Torrent’s facility is the first green hydrogen plant in Uttar Pradesh and marks the largest green hydrogen and natural gas blending project in the City Gas Distribution sector in India. Torrent Gas is authorized by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, Government of India, to supply CNG and piped natural gas (PNG) in the districts of Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Kushinagar.
So far, Torrent has established 32 CNG stations and supplies gas to over 12,000 domestic households and 73 industrial and commercial establishments in the region. The company aims to significantly expand its gas distribution infrastructure in the coming years.
Green Hydrogen is produced via electrolysis of water using renewable energy sources like solar, wind or hydropower. Unlike hydrogen produced from fossil fuels, green hydrogen has no direct carbon emissions, making it a cleaner energy carrier. Blending it with natural gas reduces carbon footprint, utilises the already laid natural gas infrastructure and helps to ramp up early demand for hydrogen.
