Hygenco breaks ground on green ammonia plant in Odisha

Hygenco Green Energies announced this week that its arm HHP Five Pvt Ltd has begun construction work for its green ammonia plant in Gopalpur, Odisha. The green ammonia facility is expected to produce 1.1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) in three phases:

  • Phase 1 (2028): 220 ktpa (kilo tonnes per annum)
  • Phase 2 (2029): Additional 220 ktpa
  • Phase 3 (2030+): Expansion to full capacity of 730 ktpa plant

“Building on our pioneering success in Green Hydrogen, Hygenco is now setting new benchmarks in India’s Green Ammonia landscape,” said Amit Bansal, co-founder and CEO, Hygenco Green Energies. “With this project, we are not only advancing the energy self-sufficiency but also unlocking export opportunities that will position India as a global leader in Green Ammonia.”

Strategically located at the Gopalpur port hub, the plant will meet both domestic and global demand for green ammonia, enabling decarbonization across key industrial sectors.

In January 2025, the green ammonia project became only the second one in India, and amongst few globally, to secure EU RED III (RFNBO) pre-certification by Bureau Veritas under CertifHy—setting a new benchmark for internationally recognized green ammonia production. Danish company Topsoe, a global leader in carbon emission reduction technologies, was chosen as the licensor for the project, which will enable flexible and efficient operations while optimizing overall performance.

Headquartered in Gurgaon, India, Hygenco develops and deploys green hydrogen and green ammonia assets. It is looking to invest $2.5 billion over three years to set up green hydrogen projects in India. Hygenco aims to deploy 10 GW of green hydrogen and ammonia assets by 2030, aligning with India’s net-zero ambitions. Hygenco has a portfolio of both commissioned and under-commissioning green hydrogen projects across the country. These include green hydrogen facilities for Jindal Stainless in Hisar, Haryana; Sterlite Technologies in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra; and a pilot plant in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
