State-owned hydropower producer NHPC and lobby group National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI) recently conducted a joint stakeholder session to discuss the technical feasibility of an Ultra Mega Solar Park in Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh.
NHPC CMD AK Singh told the developers that the hydropower producer is actively seeking cooperation with the state government and UP Power Transmission Corporation Limited (UPTCL) to make the solar park of about 600 MW capacity a reality in the Deoria district.
In the session, the NHPC team represented by BP Rao, general manager-installation and commissioning presented the details of evacuation facilities available at the proposed site, which is an island with the river Ghaghara flowing on both sides of the island.
The challenges in terms of design foundation and technical feasibility of the terrain for solar installations were discussed and developers expressed their confidence on the technical feasibility of solar plants in such terrain.
NHPC plans to conduct a more detailed survey of the topography and the soil conditions and appraise the developers in the coming months.
NSEFI vice-chairman Suman Kumar stated, “NHPC has already made its mark in India’s solar journey. NSEFI and its members are ready to extend every possible support to NHPC in terms of realizing their solar energy goals, which will ultimately contribute to realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of 100 GW of solar by 2022.”

So NHPC wants to convert a “rare island” in UP to a Solar Farm.
This is another classic case of destruction of Govt(???) land to ill-conceived Solar Farms.
As “islands” are quite rare in UP… one would think they could better be utilized for Public Recreational use rather than Solar Farms…. UP has more than enough Agricultural Land to produce Solar Energy even for ALL of India using its Agricultural Land (not reccomended…. stick to being self-sufficient rather than the “Energy Sheiks” of India)…. and save these rare valuable islands for THE PEOPLE…. ONLY….
If it is in the middle of a Hydro Project…. even better let THE PEOPLE capitalize on this rare island…. a gift to THE PEOPLE…. not to be squandered away to Solar Energy….. better installed on Farmland using AgriVoltaics…. and continue Farming and Generating Clean Solar Electricity at the same time and on the same land….
