Innovation continues to be a driver of the global PV industry. India is no exception as the sector continues to pursue the ambitious goal of 100 GW by 2022. But what is the latest status of innovative PV power plant componentry, design and execution in India in 2018? And what are key drivers and constraints to the adoption of innovative products and approaches?
The pv magazine Future PV Roundtable, held at this year’s REI in Greater Noida, brought a unique mix of technologists, equipment and material suppliers, and module and power electronics makers, together with investors and project developers, to investigate a wide range of issues pertaining to innovation.
Subrahmanyam Pulipuka, Founder and CEO of Soreva Energy Group, talked about module-level electronics, which are just setting foot in India. He pointed out that there is a rich market offering in this field, which allows for optimized monitoring.
Also speaking at the event, Jan Grimberg of DSM, said that the industry owes it to itself to become greener and develop new solutions for the recycling of solar PV materials. “By 2050 about 15% of the total e-waste in the world is expected to come from solar PV,” he said, adding that the industry needs to tackle that issue now.
Christoph Hartnig of Heraeus went on to highlight that setting standards are an essential instrument for customers to compare various materials that are used in PV products. Moreover, through a standards regime innovation can be fostered as high standards could nudge the market to favor new innovative materials.
Adding to the discussion on end-of-life treatment Hartnig pointed out that Heraeus, as well, is working towards keeping precious metals and other materials in the loop.
