India installed a record 37.9 GW of solar and 6.3 GW of wind capacity in CY2025 (January–December), marking its highest-ever annual renewable energy additions. Compared to CY2024, solar capacity additions rose by 54.7%, while wind installations increased significantly by 85.3%.
According to data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India’s cumulative installed renewable energy (RE) capacity reached 258 GW as of December 31, 2025. Solar energy accounts for approximately 53% of the total RE capacity, making it the largest contributor, followed by wind (21%), large hydro (20%), bio power (4%), and small hydro (2%).

Solar additions in CY2025 comprised 28.6 GW of new utility-scale solar capacity (up about 54.6% year-on-year), 7.9 GW of rooftop solar capacity (a 72% YoY increase), and 1.35 GW of off-grid/distributed solar capacity (8.8% lower than installations in CY2024).
The report attributed the significant rise in utility-scale solar capacity in 2025 to the commissioning of long-pending tenders awarded by various central and state agencies to renewable energy developers. Swift project execution, driven by the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) waiver deadline, encouraged developers to fast-track installation activities. In addition, the open access segment emerged as a key growth driver, accounting for over 38% of total utility-scale solar installations during the year.
The expansion of domestic solar module and cell manufacturing also supported installation growth, with cumulative manufacturing capacity for modules and cells crossing the 200 GW mark by December 2025.
Approximately 60% of the 7.9 GW of rooftop solar capacity was installed during the second half of CY2025, largely driven by the launch of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
