Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP), a unit of Nuclear Power Corp. of India Ltd (NPCIL), has successfully commissioned a 1.7 MWp grid-connected solar power plant at its nuclear facility in Haryana. This marks the second solar installation at the site.
The ground-mounted, grid-connected solar PV plant spans 22,000 square meters and was developed with a total capital investment of INR 8.07 crore, which includes a five-year comprehensive operations and maintenance (O&M) contract. It is built with domestically manufactured mono PERC solar modules rated at 545W each.
The plant is expected to generate 2.53 million units (kWh) of electricity annually.
At the current state-regulated tariff of INR 6.55 per unit, the facility is estimated to save around INR 1.66 crore in power purchase costs each year, achieving payback in about 5.8 years. Over its 25-year lifespan, the plant is expected to deliver total savings exceeding INR 40 crore.
For setting up a nuclear power plant, establishment of an exclusion zone around the plant where no habitation is permitted, is a regulatory requirement for nuclear safety. The exclusion zone requirements mean that only 48% of GHAVP’s 1,318-acre site is occupied by nuclear infrastructure. The remaining land is now being utilized for renewable projects.
Prior to this, GHAVP had commissioned a 300 kWp solar plant in 2021. Future plans include pairing solar generation with battery storage for on-site emergency lighting and peak-shaving support.
