Weaker monsoon lifts irradiance in western India as August storms dim the east
In a new weekly update for pv magazine, Solcast, a DNV company, reports that northwestern and southern India and Pakistan recorded above-average solar irradiance during the 2026 summer monsoon, benefiting major PV-producing regions, while tropical depressions drove irradiance sharply below average across eastern and central India. Favorable solar conditions helped support Indian PV generation and electricity exports to Nepal after late-August floods damaged hydropower plants and other energy infrastructure there.

El Niño transition and a subtropical shift reshape Asia’s summer solar resource
In a new weekly update for pv magazine, Solcast, a DNV company, reports that Summer 2026 brought sharply contrasting solar conditions across Asia, as a northward-shifted Western Pacific Subtropical High reduced irradiance in Northeast China while boosting it across central China. Farther south, developing El Niño conditions and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole suppressed cloud across eastern Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, driving irradiance up to 25% above average.
Developing El Niño set to reshape global solar resource
In a new weekly update for pv magazine, Solcast, a DNV company, reports that a developing El Niño is expected to strengthen through 2026, shifting global solar irradiance patterns with regional gains in India, eastern Australia, and parts of Africa and Central America, and losses in South America and East Asia. These impacts reflect established historical patterns from past strong events, where circulation changes redistribute cloud cover and rainfall rather than uniformly increasing or decreasing solar resource.
