NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL), a subsidiary of NTPC Ltd, has emerged as the successful bidder in an e-reverse auction conducted by West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. (WBSEDCL) for the development of standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in West Bengal.

The tender sought to procure 500 MW/2,000 MWh of standalone BESS capacity through a tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) process. NGEL secured 200 MW/800 MWh of BESS capacity at a tariff of INR 4.35 lakh per MW per month.

As per the tender terms, the winning BESS developer will set up a BESS, on build-own-operate basis, embedded in WBSEDCL’s distribution network with the primary objective of making the storage facility available to WBSEDCL for charging and discharging on an “on-demand” basis to meet evening and morning peak demand, with single-cycle charging and discharging.

WBSEDCL plans to use the energy storage systems on an on-demand basis according to its requirements during peak and off-peak periods.
